Ergonomics & Height: Standing Desks, Countertops & Doorway Codes

7 min read• By Ergonomic Design Lab
The architectural science behind kitchen counter heights, door clearances, and customizable ergonomic desk postures.

Why Architectural Standards Are Built Around 5'9" Stature

Most residential and commercial building codes developed in the 20th century used the 50th-percentile adult male height of 5'9" (175 cm) as the primary ergonomic baseline.

Standard kitchen countertops are built to 36 inches (91.4 cm) from the floor. This provides a 90-degree elbow resting angle for individuals between 5'6" and 5'10".

Individuals taller than 6'2" or shorter than 5'2" often experience chronic lower back or cervical spine strain when using standard-height food preparation counters.

Calculating Your Personal Standing Desk Elevation

To determine your optimal standing desk height: Stand in your working shoes with your shoulders relaxed and elbows bent at a 90-degree angle. The distance from the floor to the underside of your forearms is your ideal desk surface height.

For monitor positioning: The top third of your display screen should align directly with your horizontal eye line, preventing cervical neck flexion.
